  • Mabel Gisela Torres was born the 13th of June of 1972 in Bahía Solano (Chocó) and in 1988 entered the Universidad del Vale in Cali to study Chemical Biology, which she graduated from in 1993. She teaches in the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó and has dedicated a big part of her life as a scientist and scholar.

  • In between 1994 and 1998 she did a master in microbiology while working in a research proyecto regarding “chemoprevention of gastric cancer”. From January 1998 up to August of the same year she worked as Microbiology teacher in the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira. A year later, and up to 2002, she worked as a Microbiology Environment teacher at Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó.

  • She travelled to Mexico where she will course a PhD in Biological Sciences in the Guadalajara University. Her thesis “Systematic of Ganoderma P. Karst. Morphological, Molecular and Chemical Aspects” was awarded and receibed the title in August 2007. She then performed a postdoctoral stay of one year at the same university in “Bioprospection and Fungi Systematics”.

  • She returned to Colombia in 2012 and performed as Exectutive Director of the Research and Innovation Center at the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó. This was a national strategy with local, regional and global trascendence, to lead the Colombian biodiversity as a económical sustainable resource for the local, regional and global communities.

  • The 11th of January, 2020, in a historic decision, she was assigned as the new Minister of Science, Technology and Innoivation by the President of Colombia, Iván Duque.
